This purse was presented to me containing 45 1/2 dollars, by Mrs. Day, as a token of Christian sympathy and esteem from the ladies of the Church who had benefited by my ministry, Dec. 14, 1847, the day after the death of my dear wife.

Alas! my Heavenly Father, though Thou shoulds't slay me, yet will I trust in Thee

1 This note is in Rev. Baker's handwriting, although it is unsigned. Rev. Thomas Baker's first wife was Sarah Orange Hampson (1799-December 13, 1847). They had 8 children.
He then married Mary-Jane McIlwaine (1809/10-1882) in 1847, in Brantford, Ontario. They had one child, Mary Jane Baker, born October 10, 1849 (m. Isaac B. McQuesten). (See Rev. Baker's Biography on this site and W2953).
