W0455 TO MARGARETTE LERNED [MCQUESTEN] from J. D. Peabody
May 17 1827 [estimated date]
To: Margarette Barker Lerned [Hopkinton, New Hampshire]
My dear Miss Lerned,
I am very grateful to you for your kind offer of riding with me, I should be very happy to go, as I need the exercise very much and I do not think there would be any impropriety in it--but people are not willing to make due allowances and as I have been rather particular with my scholars in this aspect I fear they might accuse me of setting a bad example as I am not very sick. [?] [?] please excuse me for refusing your kind offer out. Believe me that I am very grateful for it but you know that at lives cost [whole line ruined by crease] I may not do as I would like to.
J. D. P. [J. D. Peabody]
