W-MCP5-6.355 TO MISS ESTIMATE RUTH ESTHER BALDWIN [MCQUESTEN] from her husband Dr. Calvin McQuesten
Aug 30 1844
To: Estimate Ruth Esther Baldwin, Antrim, New Hampshire, [U.S.A.]
From: [Hamilton, Canada]

[Dear Miss Estimate R.E. Baldwin]

[Page One illegible]

If any unforseen event should interrupt my designs I will advise you of it as early as I can. I believe that I requested you in my last to ask your Brother to attend to our habillement and to the certificate for the same.

And now my dear friend if it is the will of the all wise Being to prosper me as in former, this may be the last communication you will receive from me until we meet face to face. Yet I have learnt that "disappointment lurks in many a prize" and some times befalls us where and when we least expect it, but be assured there is no desire nor intention on my part to disappoint you, nay but quite otherwise. Believe that I love you as well as I ought even in view of the relation between us and the prospect before us--that it is right to indulge the hope that there is mutual happiness in store for us, but not to feel that it is certainly so.

It is my earnest desire, that God will prepare us for what He is preparing for us.

With these views and feelings dearly beloved I commend you to Him who I trust [?] caused you to Himself forever, and truly "adornest you as a bride for her husband." Leaving ourselves and all that concerns us at His disposal.

I am very sincerely and affectionately yours,

Calvin McQuesten.
