W-MCP5-6.309 TO ESTIMATE RUTH ESTHER BALDWIN [MCQUESTEN] from Susan Reed
Jan 16 1841
To: Estimate Ruth Esther Baldwin, Meriden, New Hampshire, [U.S.A.]
From: South Hadley, Massachusets, [U.S.A.]
Miss Lyon has just given me your letter with the request that I would answer it. I am happy to do this and to tell you that a place will be reserved for you in our family next year.
With regard to your attention to Latin, Miss Lyon thinks that as you have so well commenced it; it would be a disadvantage to you to leave it, and probably it would be much better to continue the study in connection with such of the reviews as you can most confidently attend to in your situation.
There is so much difficulty in completing the course the first year after entering the school that many who are nearly prepared for the Senior class prefer to take only a part of the [?] studies and leave the remainder until another time. In this way is avoided that pressure which must come with the examinations and reviews of the studies of two years besides pursuing the difficult ones of the last year. Miss Lyon thinks your course of study for this year is well chosen, and then next year you can enter our school and accomplish as much as possible without a certainty of being able to complete the course. Your Brother's letter has been answered in the affirmative.
